Welcome to Energy Hackathon in Turku!

Reducing energy consumption in homes, schools and at work places has significant importance to achieve emission reductions to prevent climate change.  Energy  and reducing energy use as well as the possibilities to influence with own behavior should be made interesting and participatory already for young people.

In the Energy Hackathon, we are looking for new solutions on how energy and energy consumption could be made more visible and saving energy interesting in concrete and fun ways. What kind of new digital applications or games could facilitate learning about energy inside and outside buildings?

The target group of the solutions should be end-users, especially children and young people.

All specialists, students, companies, start-ups etc. interested in games, AR, energy, coding, apps, future are warmly welcome!

REGISTRATION IN THE HACKATHON HAS BEEN CLOSED.

There is a huge potential to visualise and utilise energy data.  Combining digital solutions and visualisation with energy data and the energy theme in new ways can open up interesting business opportunities for companies.

Energy Hackathon prize is 4000 euro (sponsored by Turku Smart & Wise spearhead project)  and the winning team/s will receive support to develop the solutions further and pilot them. The winning team can present their solution at 6Aika stand in SHIFT business festival. In addition,  Lenovo lap tops will be given as prize. Read more about the Hackathon prizes in the rules.

In the event the teams will receive support and sparring from a broad group of experts including 6Aika Energy Wise Cities project, 6Aika Smart learning environments projet, Educraftor, Tieto Finland Oy, ISS Palevlut Oy, Fortum Oyj and Turku Energia.

It is possible for team to work and pitch in English. However, the Hackathon event will be mainly in Finnish. It is possible also to receive support and sparring for development of the ideas in English.

The recommendable size of the team is around 5 persons, but the teams can select the size and their members themselves. Wide range of expertise is useful to develop the solutions including coding, gamification, visualisation, energy and learning.

Teams can start development of the entry immediatly.

We have created a Hackathon SLACK for the teams! Join SLACK here. In SLACK you can

  • pose questions to the organisers and hear updated regarding the hackathon
  • create channels for your own team

Competition challenge

The theme of the Energy Hackathon is:  City and buildings as a learning environment in energy theme

It is to be hoped that that data and elements which help to demonstrate the theme in a concrete way will be utilised in the entry in a versatile way. For example building’s energy- and other consumption data (will be delivered to participants), other open source data, and e.g. elements of augmented reality. It is recommended for the team to test the idea with the target group if possible. Each team decides the extent of the solution, data used and more specific focus themselves.

Example questions to support development of ideas:

  • How could augmented reality be utilised to demonstrate energy and water consumption or energy that lightning or heating consumes or saves?
  • How different energy related AR objects could be added to the same platform? Could there be a story or a plot connecting these elements or could gamification be used to explain the content?
  • How could buildings’ energy and consumption data be utilised and energy consumption demonstrated with concrete examples using visualisation and gamification?
  • How the impacts of users’ own behaviour could be illustrated in an interesting and fun way?

The event is being organise in cooperation between Energy Wise Cities project & The Future Learning environment projects. The event is facilitated by Educraftor. As cooperation partners we have Lenovo, Turku Energia, Fortum Oyj, ISS Oy and Tieto Finland Oy. The event support the implementation of Turku Smart & Wise spearhead project.
